Gynecology covers a broad clinical experience including office gynecology, benign gynecological surgery, gynecological emergencies, urogynecology, and breast disease. Much of the residency training for this division is based at Grady Hospital, where residents staff gynecology continuity clinics under the supervision of full-time division faculty. Specialty clinics at Grady (breast, urogynecology, and reproductive endocrinology and infertility) provide residents with training in these specialized areas. The gynecology urodynamics laboratory provides comprehensive evaluation of female urinary incontinence and voiding dysfunction.

Major initiatives of the Division of Gynecologic Specialties are to train residents in proper preoperative evaluation of patients, the management of intraoperative and postoperative complications, to ensure excellence in surgical technique, and competent evaluation and management of gynecological emergencies. The inpatient benign gynecology service is run by 4th-year residents under the supervision of full-time division faculty. Daily ward rounds are conducted with all members of the team, which includes residents from each year, the medical students, and the attending faculty. Both inpatient and ambulatory surgical cases are performed primarily by the resident staff, with direct, hands-on faculty supervision. Gyn Rounds serve as informal conferences for discussion of topics relevant to general gynecology and biweekly morbidity and mortality conferences are additional learning opportunities for the residents.

Additional experience in general and subspecialty gynecology is provided at the Emory Center for Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery and Urogynecology, and at the Emory University and Veterans Administration Hospitals. In addition to their Grady Hospital responsibilities, faculty members of the Gynecologic Specialties Division see patients at The Emory Clinic, Clifton Road campus, the Medical Office Tower at Crawford Long Hospital, and the VA Medical Center.
