Medical Students

Welcome to the Gynecology and Obstetrics Department

Applications Phase (MD-705 Medical Student Clerkship)
A description of the 6-week Clerkship and expectations for students is described in the Roles and Responsibilities Handbook.  Student schedules are posted in one45.

Electives
The following electives are offered in the Gyn Ob Department for Emory and senior visiting students. Descriptions for each are posted on the OMESA web site. To register for the electives please see instructions at the OMESA site for prospective students.

Participating in an elective does not guarantee an interview for a residency position in our department.  An independent committee uses an objective scoring system based on set criteria for granting interviews to the highest scoring applicants.

Discovery Phase
Phase 3: Discovery.  Following the Applications Phase, students have structured time to concentrate in a specific area of interest, such as basic or clinical research, public health, community development, global health research, medical ethics, or other areas.  The Discovery Phase must be closely mentored and result in a final product approved by the mentor.  Students are encouraged to develop and pursue original research ideas; faculty can help coordinate the best mentor for the project.

Faculty in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics offer opportunities for students interested in the exciting field of reproductive medicine and women's health.  A brochure listing current opportunites offered by the Department as well as a Global Health Discovery Phase Opportunities brochure are posted in LearnLink and in Blackboard via the Gyn Ob Student Clerkship.  Please contact the faculty mentor listed for further information regarding the project that interests you.

Contact Dr. Jennifer Goedken for further information, help in coordinating a mentor, or with any questions.  For full information regarding projects of interest and the process for submission of project ideas, please see the SOM Discovery Phase web site.

Women's Health Elective
Educational Objectives: Expose students to clinical practice of gynecology and obstetrics. Create a forum for case-based discussions on relevant topics including reproductive rights, ethical and social issues relevant to the medical care of women, and emerging research in the field.  Goals include student interaction with faculty mentors in a clinical environment, as well as expanding and applying clinical skills.
The Women's Health elective is offered to Emory medical students during the Foundations Phase.  The Dean's Office posts information regarding this elective in Blackboard.

Additional activities include the following:

Watch a Delivery
First and Second year Emory Medical Students interested in ob gyn are eligible to participate in the Watch a Delivery program each Fall.  A student coordinator sends available dates to the students for registration.

Student Meet and Greet Events
Emory medical students are invited twice a year in the spring and fall to the department's Meet and Greet events.  The Spring Meet and Greet, for students who are interested in applying for residency in ob gyn, features nuts and bolts discussions of the application and interview processes.  The Fall Meet and Greet is geared toward students who are just beginning to be interested in the field.  Students meet with faculty and residents to discuss the many and varied career options in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.
