Dr. Spann received his undergraduate degree from St. Andrews College; after receiving his M.D. degree at Meharry Medical College he matriculated into the Gynecology and Obstetrics residency at Emory University. He served as Chief Administrative Resident during his senior year and decided to stay on as faculty in a teaching role for medical students and residents. He then entered and completed a Gynecologic Oncology fellowship at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Spann completed a Masters degree in health care management at the Harvard University School of Public Health in 2004. His primary instructional role in the department is teaching advanced surgical techniques to residents. He also serves as a surgical consultant to faculty at Grady Memorial Hospital and Crawford Long Hospital. He serves as Chief, Emory Gynecology and Obstetrics Service, Crawford Long Hospital. 

Dr. Spann has received numerous teaching awards from residents and medical students. He received the 1997 National Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology and the 1998 Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics Excellence in Teaching Award. In 1998, he was chosen Best Gynecology-Obstetrics Attending for the third time by the Emory School of Medicine's senior class and has been named Best Attending by the residents numerous times. He has sponsored dozens of Resident Research Day projects and is a mentor for those interested in pursuing fellowship or private practice opportunities. His research focus includes participation in the Gynecologic Oncology Group, placing patients on protocols for various gynecologic malignancies and gynecologic surgery.

Dr. Spann is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and currently serves as an examiner for the ABOG oral exams. He is a member of numerous societies including American Association of Gynecologic Endoscopists; Fellow, American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists; American College of Surgeons; Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (Board of Trustees); National Medical Association; The American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists; the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians, Inc.; and the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists.
