Dr. Hatcher returned to Atlanta in 1968 where he served as Director of the Family Planning Program at Grady Memorial Hospital for 27 years. During a short sabbatical, he received his Masters in Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1973. During his time at Emory University, Dr. Hatcher has been the senior author of 16 editions of Contraceptive Technology and two editions of the African version of Contraceptive Technology. One of the programs under his direction which excites Dr. Hatcher most is the summer student program. For the past 29 years, he has invited a group of college, nursing and medical students to participate in summer internships in family planning and human sexuality at Grady Hospital. Known by his friends, colleagues and family members as "Captain Condom," Dr. Hatcher has been known to pull condoms out of his pocket with very little provocation. Recently, he worked with three former summer students, Alexa Albert, James Trussell and Lee Warner, on an article published in the American Journal of Public Health The article demonstrated a condom breakage rate of less than one break per 800 acts of vaginal intercourse. Dr. Hatcher has been a board member of the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association, the Center for Population Options and the National Board of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. He is active in a number of other reproductive health organizations as well. Currently, he is president of the Bridging the Gap Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to producing high quality educational materials. Dr. Hatcher is also president of Bridging the Gap, Inc., a company which distributes Contraceptive Technology and publishes Sexual Etiquette 101,The Quest for Excellence, and Doctor, Am I a Virgin Again?. |
