The residency program in Gynecology and Obstetrics of Emory University
School of Medicine is designed to prepare physicians for board eligibility
and competent practice in gynecology and obstetrics. The program has
adopted the objectives set forth in the CREOG Educational Objectives:
Core Curriculum for Residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology (sixth edition).
On completion of the program, the physicians will have acquired the
knowledge, skill, ability, and judgment to:
- Serve as a consultant or referral source to general and family practitioners and to physicians in other specialties for medical, surgical, and primary and preventive health care services for women.
- Consider the ethical, social and moral responsibilities and obligations inherent in gynecologic and obstetric practice and primary and preventive health care services for women.
- Assess the risk status of the obstetric patient in order to determine the appropriate health care required by the patient's condition, including diagnostic, therapeutic, counseling, and primary and preventive services.
- Manage the complete medical and primary and preventive health care of low-risk obstetric patients.
- Manage the medical, primary and preventive, and surgical care of the high-risk obstetric patients, with the exception of the unusual or non-responsive complications.
- Manage the medical, primary and preventive, and surgical care of gynecologic patient including endocrinopathies, pathologies, congenital anomalies, malignancies, and infections including sexually transmitted diseases, with the exception of the unusual or non-responsive complication.
- Provide the psychosexual counseling needs of gynecologic and obstetric and primary and preventive care patients through direct care or by appropriate consultation and referral.
- Provide comprehensive patient evaluation, education, and counseling concerning the need for medical or surgical management of family planning (fertility control) and concerning infertility problems.
- Screen for exposure to health hazards and manage with appropriate counseling, diagnostic services, therapeutic services, and referral.
- Promote health for women throughout their life span by providing recommendations, counseling, and other appropriate health care measures.
- Manage life-threatening medical and surgical emergencies of obstetric and gynecologic patients.
- Consult with and refer to the care of other expert physicians those patients whose problems exceed the limits of preparation and experience or the facilities and services available to the obstetrician-gynecologist for the care of the patient.
- Provide the appropriate medical direction for the gynecologic and/or obstetric health care team in the provision of obstetric and gynecologic care.
- Complete and maintain appropriate medical records for ambulatory and hospital patients to adequately document patient care.
- Utilize documentation of treatment and outcome for self, peer, and team evaluation of patient health care needs, quality assurance, and hospital staff needs.
- Provide patient care in an understanding, emphatic, and sensitive manner which respects the dignity, individuality, and femininity of patients and which reflects the expectation that women will participate in decision making regarding their medical, surgical, primary and preventive health care.
- Acquire the necessary habits of continuous study for contemporary medical practice by accepting responsibility for and engaging in continuing education through independent study and participation in formal continuing education programs for continued professional growth and skill development.
- Initiate and complete research related to clinical health care problems or basic science issues in gynecology, obstetrics, and primary and preventive health care for women.
- Practice in different health care delivery systems - specifically public and private health maintenance organization at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of care; comprehensive maternal and infant care or women's health care programs; family planning clinics; geriatric facilities; primary and preventive care facilities; and solo, partnership, group, corporate, and multispecialty practice.
- Manage professional obligations in a manner that promotes self well-being and satisfaction and the well-being of others while maintaining healthy family relationships.
