Resident Research Day is held yearly usually in May or June. Each 2nd- and 3rd-year resident, and finishing fellow is required to participate.  PGY2s submit a written proposal and then a paper with results as PGY3s, developed with a faculty mentor/sponsor.  Each year the residents make an oral presentation of their proposal and subsequent completed study before an audience and a panel of judges.

PGY2s will present their proposals on Wednesday, May 20, 2009, to the Department and a panel of judges selected from the Department’s faculty. Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place. The second year residents will develop and present a research proposal in standard NIH grant format, which should include hypothesis, background and significance (rationale), and study design. The study design should include methods for statistical analysis, including a power analysis, expected outcomes, potential problems, and how they will be addressed.

PGY3s and finishing fellows will present their proposals on Friday, May 22, 2009, to the Department and a panel of invited, guest faculty judges. Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place. The presentations by third year residents and finishing fellows should include the results of a completed study, and should also include most of the elements outlined above: research proposal in standard NIH grant format, including hypothesis, background and significance (rationale), and study design. The study design should include methods for statistical analysis, including a power analysis, expected outcomes, potential problems and how they will be addressed, and the results of the study.

Residents may select faculty sponsors from the Department faculty members or University faculty from outside the Department.

Residents who are conducting clinical research studies involving humans are encouraged to seek the assistance and support of the Atlanta Clinical and Translational Science Institute (ACTSI) located at either Grady or the Emory main campus. The ACTSI will provide assistance with study design and study implementation, including scientific review of proposals, statistical assistance, and design of a database. It is best to consult ACTSI during the design phase and not after the data has been assembled.

Each resident or fellow presentation will be followed by a formal discussion. The discussants will be selected by the RRD committee, which is comprised of the RRD Program Directors, interested faculty members from the Department of Gyn/Ob, the residency director, and associate director. The discussant will facilitate discussion with the audience and judges, clarify points made in the presentation, ask questions of the resident to emphasize results, delineate further points to be studied, etc.

Judges will review the oral presentations and select the most worthy presentations for the prizes. For the presentations on Friday by PGY3s and fellows, typically, two judges from outside Emory University and one faculty member from within the Emory University community will be invited. The judges also serve as guest faculty members making one presentation each. The John D. Thompson Lectureship in Pelvic Surgery is presented by the judge in gynecology; the W. Newton Long Lectureship is presented by the judge in obstetrics; the Emory judge presents a topic of his/her choosing or at the request of the Chairman.

On Wednesday, May 20, 2009, PGY2 Residents will have 10 minutes for their presentation; the discussant will have 8 minutes after the resident's presentation; and 2 minutes are allotted for questions and answers.

On Friday, May 22, 2009, PGY3 Residents will have 10 minutes for their presentation; the discussant will have 3 minutes after the resident's presentation; and 2 minutes are allotted for questions and answers.
