| A message from the Emory Regional Training Center
Since 1970, the Emory Regional Training Center (RTC) has served as the training resource for federal Region IV of the Title X Family Planning program. Our mission has been to enhance well-being among women and their families through the communication of new knowledge and buttressing clinical skills by providing regular training updates to those who deliver care to the patients of Title X clinics. In June 2008, we submitted an application to renew the federal grant that funded nearly 90% of the Emory RTC operations. Competition for funding was intense and despite having been continuously funded for more than 30 years, the Emory RTC was not selected as the training center for federal Region IV and will not be granted renewed funding by the Federal Office of Public Health and Science. With the loss of this responsibility and the funding to support it, the Emory RTC will close effective November 30, 2008.
We are honored to have been the stewards for general training and advanced practice training in reproductive health services for our region. Over the years, our programs and services expanded to include a variety of reproductive health-related initiatives including conferences, in-depth clinical training workshops, and demonstration projects on topics such as Adolescent Pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, Chlamydia, Domestic Violence, Diabetes, Colposcopy, and Substance Abuse. Through these programs we have realized our mission and have improved the health and well being of thousands of women and their families. Our programs reached clinicians and staff of 1,200 clinics in the 8 states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee) of our region. Additional training programs in colposcopy and the certificate nurse practitioner program enabled our center to have an impact nationally by training more than 1000 advanced practice nurses and physicians who have taken their skills back to their local communities.
As we prepare to move on in new directions, we reflect on our accomplishments and the legacy of work we have contributed to our region and are pleased to know that we have made an impact and met our goals. We too have been impacted by the many relationships we have built across the Southeast. We thank our clients, the Title X Service Grantees across Region IV, the Regional Office, our nine sister training centers, and the Office of Public Health and Science senior staff for allowing us to be their training partner. We have enjoyed being your resource for advancing health opportunities for the women and families of our region.
In good health,
The staff of Emory Regional Training Center
