Community Challenges for HIV Prevention was held in Orangeburg South Carolina on December 11, 2002 at the Orangeburg Mall Cinema Rooms. The conference was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Region IV Office of Population Affairs, in collaboration with Emory Regional Training Center and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. The community-based conference was designed for service providers as well as community members who want to make a difference by taking the lead in responding to HIV/AIDS in Orangeburg and the surrounding counties. Goals of the conference included enhancing local community organizations’ collaborative efforts; effectively building the community’s competence to prevent the spread of HIV; and promoting the discussion of issues, as well as highlighting successful programs in the region.

137 individuals participated in the conference representing HIV/AIDS organizations, education, government, public health, social service agencies, as well as other types of organizations. Fifteen agencies from the local, state and regional levels provided exhibits for the conference.

The conference highlighted federal, state and local resources for HIV services as well as offer interactive panel sessions on effective prevention programs for different populations. Presentation topics included National and State Overviews of HIV/AIDS, “Men on the Down Low” and the HIV/AIDS Epidemic Among Women, Creating the Response to the Epidemic, as well as panel presentations on Rural Best Practices, Community Planning and Local Community Response. Dr. George Roberts, Special Assistant for Communities of Color in the CDC Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention provided the inspiring luncheon presentation on “The Crisis of HIV/AIDS Among African Americans: The Need for Community Action.”
