For more than three-quarters of a century, Emory University School of Medicine's Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics has provided excellence in education, patient care, and clinical / basic science research. Under the leadership of our Interim Chair, Ira R. Horowitz, MD, SM, the department provides clinical service, teaching, and research through seven divisions - obstetrics, gynecology, reproductive endocrine and infertility, maternal-fetal medicine, gynecology oncology, family planning, and female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery - comprised of faculty, residents, fellows, and staff at five diverse hospital sites and accompanying clinics and basic science research laboratories.
Since 1926 when the first resident graduated from Emory, the Gynecology and Obstetrics Residency Training Program has trained more than 500 gynecologists and obstetricians who practice throughout the United States and at locations around the world.
Faculty members and voluntary clinical faculty members serve a diverse patient population with conditions ranging from uncomplicated pregnancies to complex problems such as infertility, cancer, pelvic disease, and congenital anomalies.
While our activities are based primarily in metropolitan Atlanta, consultation, treatment, continuing education, and professional leadership as well as the legacy of former residents and fellows, extend globally.
Health Care Leaders of the Future
Our mission includes improving gynecologic and obstetric care and education in Atlanta neighborhoods, other communities in the state, and beyond. Emory's residency program provides this outreach. More than forty percent of the gynecologists and obstetricians practicing in Georgia received at least part of their education at Emory University School of Medicine. Continuing Education courses provided by our department help maintain the high quality of obstetric and gynecologic practice in the state.
